About "Ms. Krys"
Krystiane Cooper,  MSW, LCSW, RPT-S

Trained in both play therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy, I believe families often have positive instincts, but require support and education to apply the skills they need in order to affect positive and lasting change.

I am a registered play therapist supervisor (RPT-S) and clinical social worker with over 20 years of experience with children and adolescents (2 to 21) and with a variety of concerns, including: trauma (abuse, neglect, domestic violence, homelessness), attachment/ international adoption, grief and loss, divorce, school problems, behavioral issues, anxiety and depression, and family conflicts.

Since I have spent much of my career working within the school systems of Philadelphia and surrounding counties, I possess significant understanding of IEPs, autism spectrum disorders, and sensory integration issues.  I understand the challenges parents and children face when their basic needs are not met - at home or at school - and am a strong and skilled advocate for your child’s mental and academic health.

My work goes beyond child and family therapy.  I provide IEP advocacy, classroom observation, “supernanny” in-home observations and interventions, and school-based trainings on trauma for both teachers and students, as well.  Mindfulness, recovery, attachment, and play are part of my therapeutic toolkit.  I value an eclectic therapeutic model, and am skilled at shifting gears when the need arises.

Because I am a registered play therapist-supervisor (RPT-S), I know how to utilize play in order to affect healing and growth for children and families.  I use Theraplay, Jungian sandtray, and both directive (cognitive-behavioral) and non-directive (child-centered) play modalities to engage with children and their caregivers.
